Smashing Strawberries

Yesterday, I went to a science convention at Railroad Square. I measured the salinity of water, held sea urchins, looked at fruit flies under a microscope, created fake clouds, and more. But the best part was extracting DNA from a strawberry. That's right. I have a picture below.

Here's how I did it. First, I smashed the strawberry into a clumpy bumpy juice. Then, I used detergents to break the cells apart. Then, mixing it all together, I filtered out the large particles. Next, I put pure alcohol in the mixture to clump the DNA together. The picture below shows me holding condensed DNA, of course. If it was stretched out, it could go to the sun and back. Isn't that wild?
